Dr. Daniel D. Carpenter   ("Dr. Dan")

Hi! I’m Dr. Dan Carpenter and I welcome you to my web page. On it, you’ll find some of my recommended links to sites dealing mostly with health issues, both mental and physical, but broad enough in nature to even include sites for those looking for employment or help with finances. I’ve also included additional information that you might find helpful as you look for a professional counselor in the Portland, Oregon area. Take some time to browse the site, and please furnish me with comments that may help to improve it to more closely serve your needs.

With individuals, I specialize in treating anxiety disorders (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, General Anxiety Disorder, phobias (including Social Phobia), etc.) and mood disorders such a Major depression and Bipolar (“manic-depressive”) illness. I also provide assistance with grief work, dementia, schizophrenia, career “retooling”, life transitions (having children, empty nesters, health issues such as cancer, life adjustments, Divorce Recovery issues, step-family issues) and I work with clients suffering from compulsions such as pornography and gambling addictions. Caregivers are a special "breed" of person, and I offer supportive services to them and I may open up a group for caregivers in the future if there is interest in this. I also offer referral services for chemical dependency problems, small children, and certain adolescent issues. I treat other disorders too numerous to list here, but phone me and we can talk about your (or your friends’/loved one’s) specific needs. 503-984-4389. My office is wheelchair accessible and provides both private and public entrances.

As a person committed to traditional husband/wife marriage and married for over 37 years (at last count!), I find my work with couples to be very satisfying when I’m able to play a part in helping a couple transition from barely being able to speak to one another, perhaps only a couple of steps from the courthouse doors, to a point in which love, communication, and emotional connection are restored and family life once again becomes satisfying.

Another area I work in is the area of Christian Counseling. I find that persons with a spiritual interest and background have special counseling needs and I am privileged to work with those folks and assist in developing a spiritually-supportive base. Although my own world-view is unashamedly Christian, non-Christians find my services helpful in that, unlike most psychologists, I embrace spirituality rather than shy away from it. Although I may find my spiritual identity in a faith different than yours, I don’t believe that this in itself would cause a problem with us working together—we might both find this an experience which will not only help us focus on our own spirituality, but maybe find ourselves stretched to understand other faith systems as well.

Other populations: I have backgrounds in with the Military, Law Enforcement and as Clergy, and I treat problems in each of these areas, with attention also given to the spouse involved.  As a cancer survivor, there is a special place in my heart for those with this horrible disease.

Most people want to know a bit about my professional background, and that’s a fair request. I’ll answer it now in bullet form, followed with short comments. For those of you desiring more in-depth information, review my Vita (professional resume’) on this site.

EDUCATION: George Fox University—3 Graduate degrees (M.A. Clinical Psychology, M.A. Christian Studies, Psy.D. (Doctorate) in Psychology, in addition to an undergraduate degree in the Management of Human Resources. All four degrees were summa cum laude (although some programs did not formally recognize this honor.) For a list of additional coursework, please refer to my Vita.
